Info
Franco Scoglio Stadium or Stadio San Filippo is a football stadium in Messina, Italy. It is home to the local football team which participates in the Italian Serie C. San Filippo is called the region where the stadium is built while Franco Scoglio is a former Messina manager. Following his death, in 2016 the city of Messina, the place where he was born as well as the home of ACR Messina, a club he coached for many years, honored his memory by renaming the local stadium after him.
The stadium was first designed in the late 80s with plans to be part of the Italia 1990 World Cup. After several setbacks, in 2001 after the success of the Messina team, which had returned to the top league of the Italian professional football, a decision was made to build the stadium.
Finally, the stadium was officially opened on August 17, 2004 with Messina playing against Juventus in a friendly match. The first official match was a week later, on August 22 with Messina playing for the Coppa Italia.
The total number of seats available in the entire stadium is 38,722. The record of attendance was presented on On 19 February 2005 when 40,000 spectators watched a 0-0 draw against Juventus.
Part of the structure was built below natural ground level. Because there is no athletic track around the field, the visibility is excellent in all sectors. However, the entire stadium has no covered seats, leaving the fans exposed to all weather conditions.
