The Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, commonly referred to as the Brasileirão is the top tier of the Brazilian professional football league system.
20 teams will participate in the 2023 championship and in this article, we will have a look at the stadiums that will host this tournament.
Brazil Serie A 2023 Stadiums
The biggest Brazilian stadium and the 3rd in South America is the Estádio do Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. Built in 1950 the stadium has hosted two Word cup finals, 1950 and in 2014. The iconic Brazilian stadium has seen attendances of 150,000 or more on 26 occasions but now the capacity is reduced to 78,838 seats.It is now used as the home venue for Flamengo and Fluminense. Flamengo has been playing constantly in Serie A since 1967 and has won the title 7 times. Fluminense has won the title 4 times in 56 appearances.
The Estádio Raimundo Sampaio, more commonly known as Independência is located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It was built in 1950 for the FIFA World Cup and in 2010 it was demolished apart from its dressing rooms, and a brand new stadium was built in its place. Now it is used as the home ground of America Mineiro which will participate in its 20th Brasileirao championship.
One of the most historic stadiums in Brazil is the Estádio São Januário in Rio de Janeiro. Opened in 1927 it has a capacity of 21,880 and it is owned by the football club Vasco da Gama. The 4 times Brazilian champions have been promoted this year for their 55th appearance in the League.
The Arena da Baixada, is located in Curitiba, Brazil. The stadium opened in 1999 and was renovated in 2014 in order to host matches for the 2014 World Cup. With 42,372 seat capacity, it is the home stadium of Athletico Paranaense. This will be the 48th appearance in the tournament for the 2001 Brazilian champions.
The Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova is located in the city of Salvador. Opened in 2013 with a 47,907 seat capacity it was one of the venues of the 2014 World Cup. Now it is the home stadium of Esporte Bahia. Bahia has won the first ever Brasileirão title in 1959. The club was also the title winner in 1988 and was promoted last year from Serie B for the 51st season in the first division.
The Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos is a multi-purpose stadium located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Since its opening in 2007, it is the home ground of Botafogo. Botafogo has spent 58 years in the top tier of Brazilian football and has won the title twice.
The Arena Corinthians is a football stadium located in São Paulo. It opened just before the 2014 World Cup where it hosted six games. The stadium, which can hold 50,000 people, is owned and operated by Corinthians. The club has won 7 titles in 55 Brazilian Serie A appearances.
The Estádio Couto Pereira is located in the city of Curitiba. Opened in 1932, it now has a capacity of 40,502 and it is the home stadium of Coritiba. The 1985 Brazilian champions have played in the Brazilian Serie A 42 times in their history.
The Arena Pantanal is located in Cuiabá and was built in 2014 in order to host games for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It has a capacity of 44,000 and it is the home ground of Cuiaba. The club started playing in the Brazilian Serie A in 2021.
The Estádio Castelão was inaugurated in 1973 in Fortaleza, Brazil with a maximum capacity of 63,903 spectators. The stadium was one of the venues that hosted the 2014 world cup and currently, it is used as the home stadium of Fortaleza. Fortaleza has finished in second place twice in 24 seasons in the top division.
The Estádio Nabi Abi Chedid is located in the Sao Paulo state. Opened in 1949, it is the home of Red Bull Bragantino. The 1991 runners-up will participate in Serie A for the 13th time in their history.
The Estádio da Serrinha, is located in Goiânia. Opened in 1995, it hosts the home matches of Goiás Esporte Clube. The stadium has currently a capacity of 14,450 people. Goias best result in Serie A is the 3rd place in 2005 in 42 total appearances.
The Arena do Grêmio is a football stadium in Porto Alegre. Opened in 2013 with a capacity of 60,540 it is used as the home ground to Gremio. Gremio, along with Santos, has the most Serie A appearances with 62. They have won the title twice.
The other stadium in Porto Alegre is the Estadio Beira Rio, the home of Internacional. Opened in 1969, it was renovated to host games for the 2014 World Cup. Inter has clinched 3 titles in 56 appearances in the Brazilian top division.
The Allianz Parque is a football stadium in São Paulo, Brazil. Opened in 2014, the stadium has a capacity of 43,713 spectators. The stadium is the home to the current Brazilian champions and the most successful team in the Brasileiro, Palmeiras. The club has 11 titles and 4 second positions in 59 appearances in the League.
The Estádio Urbano Caldeira, also known as Vila Belmiro, is located in São Paulo, Brazil. The home of Santos, it was built in 1916 and it is one of the oldest stadiums in Brazil. Santos, along with Gremio is the team with the most appearances in the Serie A with 63. The club has won the title 8 times, being the finalist another 8 times.
The Mineirao stadium is located in Bello Horizonte Brazil. Opened in 1965, the stadium has a capacity of 61,927 and hosted matches for the 2014 world cup. The stadium is the home venue for Cruzeiro. In 60 appearances in Serie A, Cruzeiro has won the title 4 times. The facility will also be used by Atletico Mineiro until their new stadium will be ready in 2023. Atlético is currently building a new stadium, the Arena MRV, which will have a capacity of over 48,000 spectators. Atletico Mineiro has won the champions twice and was the runner ups 5 times in 60 appearances in the Brazil Serie A.
